How:

In Kenya:

The Green Belt Movement (GBM) has over 4,000 community groups planting trees to restore critical watersheds across Kenya. KFS has 10 existing conservancies, 71 zonal managers, and 600 forest officers ensuring an active national presence.

The Hummingbird Campaign will utilise existing KFS infrastructure in Kenya to provide venues and guidance for those who wish to participate in planting trees.  KFS will ensure that all trees planted are accounted for in its Seed Nursery Directory (which uses GPS tracking). It will be possible to track the number and location of trees planted during this initiative. By way of such a national concerted effort, it is estimated that this initiative could help increase Kenya’s forest cover by 10%.

This initiative will take advantage of the fact that October is the Eastern region planting season. We will still incorporate planting in the Western region, though will utilize less trees in the Western region as conditions are not favourable at the moment. You can mark your tree on the map above. Internationally:

Our target is to plant 1 billion trees in honour of Wangari Maathai, with friends around the world who want to remember her and pay tribute to her life’s work while protecting the environment. GBM will be hosting memorial events in the next year with tree planting at its regional offices. Sign up to receive e-newsletters from us on our website. You can also host your own memorial and tree planting event. Please visit our FAQs page for more information. Remember to come back and share your tree planting on the interactive map.
